A crowd of pilgrims was drew by the Holy Mass celebrated by cardinal Severino Poletto on Tuesday 4 May, with the volunteers, the Organizing Committee and the diocesan Commission for the Holy Shroud. On that occasion was celebrated the liturgical memory of the Holy Shroud that falls on 4 May.
Beda Umberto Paluzzi, abbot of Montevergine, attended the Mass. A very strong bond links the Sanctuary of Montevergine to the Holy Shroud. From 1939 al 1946, during the Second World War, the Holy Shroud was housed in he Sanctuary of Montevergine, in Avellino. For over 7 years the cloth was secretly stored below the altar of the chapel, where the Benedictine monks used to celebrate the Vespers. On 7 September 1939, abbot Ramiro Marcone was urgently called to the Vatican by mons. Giovanni Battista Mortini, Secretary of State and future Pope Paul VI. 25 days later, the Holy Shroud was carried by cardinal Maurilio Fossati to the Sanctuary of Montevergine; it got back to Turin on 29 October 1946.
