Over 2.500 sick and disabled persons to visit the Shroud
On the occasion of the pilgrimage organized by Unitalsi (National Italian Union for Transporting the Sick to Lourdes and International Shrines), over 2.500 sick and disabled persons and assistance staff from all over Italy arrived yesterday to visit the Holy Shroud. 38 buses and 12 minibuses arrived from Calabria, Campania, Basilicata, Puglia, Molise, Marche, Lazio, Friuli, Veneto, Trentino, Lombardia and Liguria.
Their pilgrimage began at the church of Santo Volto; at 10.30 a.m. they were welcomed by the Piedmonts representatives of the Association; at 11 a.m. they followed the speech of mons. Giuseppe Ghiberti about La Sindone: provocazione per luomo del nostro tempo. Afterwards, cardinal Severino Poletto held the Mass celebration.
In the afternoon 2.500 pilgrims visited the Holy Shroud. «Seeing the image of sufferings on the Holy Shroud is a very touching experience for me. It reminds me the suffering of all the sick, commented Giulio, elderly person in wheelchair coming from Molise. «Our association takes care of the sick and the poor, explained mons. Luigi Moretti, national assistant of Unitalsi and vice director of the diocese of Rome. Coming here means encountering the Jesus Christ sufferings; this is a great example that makes us discover the suffering of the sick.»
