From the legal medical study of the imprint of the Shroud it
seems evident that the man who was wrapped in it had been beaten in the hours preceding
his death. Observing the face, we note some tumefactions that seem to be ematomas. They
are visible especially on the right cheek, which looks distinctly swollen as compared to
the left one. Besides, there are signs ascribable to lacerated and contuse wounds,
especially on the horbital arch. The nasal sectum is deviated by a fracture. On the
forehead, on the nape of the neck and along the hair imprint there are evident and
numerous blood flows, with sinuous course, that came from puncture wounds of small
diameter. Such wounds go radially around the head and they reach the top of the occipital
cap. They seem to have been caused by the imposition of a helmet made of sharp thorns. A
blood flow on the center of the head is noted to take the configuration of a reversed
letter "3", following the course of the wrinkles on the forehead. The horizontal
dark lines that define the face and the nape of the neck are due to some creases of the
cloth.
