Four evident series of round scorches in a symmetric pattern are
visible on the shroud. They can not be ascribed to the fire that took place in Chambery in
1532. However, their location suggests a system of folding which is different from the one
implied by the scorches of the Chambery fire. These burn holes were certainly made before
the 1532 fire, since they appear in a painting of the Shroud made in 1526 and preserved in
Lierre, Belgium. The holes were not mended, unlike those caused by the Chambery fire. In
fact, the Holland cloth to which the Shroud was sewn as structural reinforcement in the
restoration of 1534, is visible beneath them. |
