The face of
Christ should be revealed by every Christian
From the Homily pronounced Sunday 25 November 1973 by Cardinal M. Pellegrino for the
opening of the Holy Year.
... There, behind that stained glass window, in a chapel where the piety of the people
of Torino is represented by one of the most beautiful artistic creations of the century,
an object is preserved and venerated, an object that recalls, in a living and moving way,
how Christ shed His blood for us.
It reminds us of the King who turned gallows into His throne, who did not conquer His
kingdom with His strength or His weapons, but "sacrificing himself, immaculate victim
of peace, on the altar of the Cross", as we will say in the prefatio.
....
In the beginning of this Holy Year, the celebration of Christ King, just after the
Exposition of the Shroud, that reminds us His immolation on the Cross, calls us to fulfill
the great expectations of this time of grace: to renovate our spirit, to be converted and
reconciled with God and with our brothers.
Since Christ loves us, He "delivered us from evil through his blood" and
"turned us in a kingdom of priests for His God and Father", we have to escape
the sin, be converted and renew our spirit, so that we can recognize and follow Gods
will. We should live trying to witness the face of Christ in our lives; the same face that
we contemplate in the Holy Shroud and that is an invitation to gratitude and love. It
should be revealed by every Christian, who is called to be, as the Savior, "faithful
witness" for his brothers.
