| More than a hundred thousand
connections were recorded by the Official Shroud’s web site (http://sindone.torino.chiesacattolica.it) in the fifty-seven days of the Exposition of the
Shroud. This result states a great interest toward internet web sites as an instrument of
knowledge, information, investigation. The realization of the web site was planned long
ago and it was finally activated in the summer of 1997. The web site was carefully planned and designed by
the Turinese Cooperativa La Bussola. A team that counted about ten people (computer
experts, designers and translators) worked in collaboration and with the approval of the
Commissione Diocesana per l’Ostensione della Sindone and the Comitato per la Solenne
Ostensione della Sindone. (Diocesan Commission for the Exposition of the Shroud and the
Committee for the Solemn Exposition of the Shroud).
The web site was enriched gradually with
contents and now it counts hundreds of graphics and images, and about two hundred
articles, translated in four languages, in total more than five hundred web pages.
The latest technology was used in the
realization of the web site, for example the translators, one of them lives in the United
States, worked mostly by electronic mail. This allowed the technicians to update the web
site constantly and continuously.
The web site contains also videos, taken
by Telesubalpina (a Catholic TV channel) and codified for the web with "Real
Video". Moreover, La Bussola and Telesubalpina gave the public the possibility to
watch live the main events that took place in the "Duomo" during the period of
the exposition (such as the Pope’s visit). A camera connected to the official web
site of the Church was placed inside the cathedral and it broadcast the images on the web.
A wide use of electronic mail was made.
Messages of appreciation for the structure, graphics and contents of the web site came
from all over the world. The web site will remain active also after the closing of the
exposition and it will be constantly updated.
