12 August - 12 September: 44.000 FOREIGNERS TO SEE THE SHROUD OF TURIN

During the first month since its opening, 293.603 pilgrims visited the Exposition of the Shroud, with an average of 9.175 visitors per day. Moreover, 84.000 people (about 2.600 per day) saw the Shroud from afar, just walking into the Duomo through its main entrance. The 9 of September was the day that had the highest number of visitors (22.078 ). On 15 of August only 3.923 people went to see the Shroud, since it was an Italian national Holiday and the Exposition was open only a few hours in the morning.

Foreigners were 43.967, 14,9% of the total number of visitors. There was an average attendance rate of 1.373 foreign pilgrims per day. We should add 5.000 students to this number (2.500 of them were from France). They went to see the Shroud during the Youth World Days, and their reservations were made together with those of their Italian host groups, parishes or associations.

Most of the foreign visitors came from the European Community (24.125 people, about 54,87% of the total). Many pilgrims came from Eastern Europe (7.958, 18,1% of the total). Up to date, 4.341 pilgrims came from North America and 20.585 from South America, 1.107 from the Middle East and 396 from Africa.

Today, at 4 p.m., 81.948 were the reservation made from abroad for the whole period of the Exposition (11,8% of the total). They were made by people coming from 146 different nations (out of 189 UN nations). During the Exposition of 1998, 58.829 foreign visitors came to Turin, from 67 countries.

The highest number of foreigners came from France. After them we find Polish and Spanish pilgrims, this year. This is the comparison between foreign visitors in 1998 and the reservations made until 4 p.m. today.
