Zurbaran,(Fuente de
Cantos, 1598 - Madrid 1664) "Christ
blessing",
1631. Oil on canvas. Stockholm, Nationalmuseum,
cm 70 x 51.5Unlike other 17th
century Spanish painters Zurbaran`s art, can be
fully understood only if we consider how the
realistic effect and the intensity of his
paintings are expression of its content and
spiritual message. His works are the pictorial
expression of the great Spanish mystique of the
century. The devotional themes represented were
the expression of an inner journey, which had its
roots in a deep experience of faith. In the
Stockholm picture, in particular, we notice the
painter`s ability in organizing the elements of
the scene: the draping goes around the image as a
frame, the face of Christ painted on the shroud shows
solemnity and "pathos". But at the same
time the picture is a meditation on Christs
humanity, grief and mystery of redemption.
"Many say: who will let us see the
good ? Lord, let your light shine on us"
Psalm 4,7
