School
of Moscow, "SaviorAcheropitus" and "Do Not
Cry on Me Mother"16th cent., tempera on wood. Museum
"Kolomenskor", cm 140x118
The complex icon shows
two different registers in two scenes: in the one
above there is a representation of the Holy face , called Savior
Acheropitus (wich means in Greek "not made
by hands of man". This is the name given to
sacred images whose origin is attributed to a
divine intervention). It shows on the sides two
angels who hold a towel, which is a particular
type of icon called Mandilion. In the lower half
of the picture Christ is standing in the
sarcophagus and He is surrounded by the
disciples, who grieve with His Mother. The Holy
Face is prominent. It is portrayed in the center
of the wide white linen, which is finely
decorated by an embroidered border and made noble
by two angels. They wear precious and decorated
robes and create a living and adoring frame. On
the Face there are no signs of sufferings or of
the Passion. This element differentiates this
representation from those inspired by the Western
traditions of the Shroud and of the Veronica.
"Now, therefore, O
our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his
supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon
thy sanctuary, that is desolate, for the Lord's
sake."(Daniel 9:17)
