Hans
Memling, (Seligemstadt, 1435-40c -
Bruges, 1494),
Christ crowned with thorns,
oil painting, Genoa, Palazzo Bianco, cm 52 x 33.The
exact name of this painting should be "The
Redemptor". Actually the risen Christ is
represented; the signs of the nails, proof of the
passion and death could be seen on his hands. The
artist, whose devotion is obvious considering his
membership to the Confraternity of
Our Lady of the Snow at Bruges Cathedral presents
us the victorious face of Christ expressing the
sufferings he borne for the salvation from sin:
the crowning with thorns, crucifixion and death.
The dark background and the gloomy thin clothes
covering him evidence the brightness of his face
and hands. We thus have a sort of double register,
which enables a double version of the work.
"For in him all the fulness of God
was pleased to dwell, and through him to
reconcile to himsef all things whether on earth
or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his
cross. Col. 1, 19-20
