It is the knowledge acquired through religious practice which aims to create a contact and a communion between man and heaven. This connection is not a mere intellectual vision but a spiritual and emotional union, a life experience. Zurbaran`s century witnessed the spread of many mystical philosophies inspired by the lives of two important Catholic thinkers: Teresa d`Avila (1515 - 1582) and Giovanni della Croce (1542 - 1591).
