Rouault is probably the greatest religious painter of the twentieth century. He discovered God looking attentively to the injustice and aberrations of contemporary world (his favourite themes were prostitutes, outcasts, freaks, judges) The God he represents is never a majestic king but He is the humble suffering servant, disfigured by men’s sins.
Roualt religiosity is very peculiar in a century in which we witnessed a progressive laicization of the arts, no longer interested in religion.
