According to Vasari, the author of “Lives of Painters and Artists of the 16th century”, Italian art was at its height with Michelangelo and Raffaello. Right after them, the artists could not but imitate them. Rosso probably tried to follow those great painters’ style. Leaving out Vasari’s theories, it is impossible to deny that, in this picture, Jesus’ corporeity sends us back to the figures in the Sistin Chapel, that Michelangelo finished in 1512.
