Mandilion
It is the towel on which are imprinted the
features of Jesus face, clearly implying its prodigious origin.
This kind of icons were wide spread in the Slavic world and in
Russia. The image was thought to have a healing power and it was
usually placed on the doors of the cities, in Edessa for example.
In Russia, the icons of the Mandilion were used also as icons
with a codified meaning, sometimes, in substitution of the
Pantocrator (in Greek: creator of everything).
