Holy face
It is peculiar in the Byzantine tradition,
because of its miraculous origin and for its role in history, in
the liturgy and in the devotion of the Orthodox Church. It is
portrayed in a golden halo, and it has regular features; the hair
is split in the middle and falls free on the two sides of the
head. Christ`s eyes are wide open and seem to stare at the
observer, as topenetrate the secrets of his heart. His nose is
long and narrow, and, with the eyebrows, it forms an image that
recalls a palm tree.
