tumefied

When Jesus was on the Cross, His face must have looked like the face of the man of the Shroud, with his swellings and tumefactions. The wounds were caused by the violence the soldiers inflicted to Him during the interrogatory and when they made fun of Him with a crown of thorns, but also when He fell during the journey to Mount Calvary.

The horizontal beam of the cross was tied to His shoulders. On one end, it used to be tied with a rope to one of the convicted’s ankles to prevent him to run away. This unnatural position could easily make him fall down, causing wounds especially to his head, since he could not protect himself, with his arms and hands, that were tied to the beam.
