Landscape
Antonello is one of the greater landscape painters in the history of Italian art. However, in this work the landscape misses the typical atmosphere that we find in other paintings of his. This fact led many historians to think that the background was painted by Jacobello, Antonello’s son, who was a mediocre painter but also the heir of Antonello’s shop. If this was true, it would confirm the late date of this work, probably the last years of Antonello’s life, when he came back to Messina after his stay in Milan, Genoa and Venice.
