Chagall

Poetic-artistic world

Chagall expressed his particular view of art not only in paintings but also in drawings, (he illustrated "The Dead Souls" by Gogol, "The Fairy Tales" by La Fontaine and the Bible), in decorations on china, in arrases (especially those made for the Israeli parliament), and finally in stained glass works. He made the stained glass windows of the Saint-Etienne Cathedral in Metz (with stories of Old and New Testament), those of Notre-Dame-de-Toute-Grace in Assy and the windows representing the twelve tribes of Israel, in the synagogue of the new hospital of Hadassah, near Jerusalem. These works are real masterpieces, not inferior to the wonderful glass works of the Gothic period.
