Gestures

The painter’s skill is impressive; he was perfectly able to communicate the characters’ intense participation to the tragedy of Christ’s death. Mary is holding her son’s thin wrist in her hands, John is supporting her while his eyes look lost; a woman calmly wipes Mary’s tears and another woman covers her own mouth: she is speechless for what happened, Nicodemus and Joseph depose the body in the Sepulchre as if it was a relic (they touch it only through the linen), Mary Magdalen, with a delicate gesture, fixes the linen so that it wraps the body tightly.
