The Descent from the Cross and the Virgin Mary, 1515
Torino, Galleria Sabauda, cm 164x132
The descent from the cross is represented
in a bright landscape, which seems to anticipate the dawn of
Resurrection. The character’s pain is calm, their gestures
are measured. The presence of a Carmelite Saint locates the
scene beyond history and beyond time. Christ’s body, lying
on a stone, gathers all the characters around Him and becomes
the main point and the centre of the event.
Listening to the painting
Mary: “Son, you are here, dead, and I am holding you in
my arms one last time. It was so different when I held you in
the manger in Bethlehem and I introduced you to the three kings
coming from Orient. At that time, I could not understand
all that would happen. I trusted God since the angel told me I
was going to become your mother. Now the words old prophet
Simon spoke in the temple, when Joseph and I presented you to
God, are clear. Now I understand and feel the pain caused by
the sword that is piercing my heart. I will add this event to
the things my heart keeps, until God’s promise will be
accomplished.”
