Donatello di Betto Bardi called Donatello (Florence, 1386c - 1466)
Deposition, 1448, Nanto stone relief;
Padoa, St.Antony's Basilica, cm 139 x 188
Christ's body, the only horizontal line is lying on a sarcophagus (it became precious when hard stones, coloured marbles and gold flakes were added) in a zig-zag pattern.
In this way the scene becomes more dramatic.
It seems there's a lack of space in this Padoan work: the eight figures around Jesus seem to be crowded, their gestures are overlapping and their expressions are really striking.
Mary of Magdalene's gesture, at the centre, screaming and with her arms open, seems to squezze further the standing figures on the sides.
This is one of the most dramatic scenes of the burial; a very difficult work when we consider that it was carried out in relief and in a limited space.
The innocent's death causes sorrow, dismay, anger, desperation...
Victim and priest of his sacrifice, Jesus offers himself for the salvation of the world.
