Giovanni
Bellini, Christ blessing; 1460,
tempera on wood Paris, Musée du Louvre, cm 58 x
44.Hieratical, sweet, solemn- these are some
of the adjectives we can use to qualify this
superb paint by "Giambellino". The
"Blessing Christ" is risen, but the
intense expression still reminds us of the
dreadful death, clearly shown by the sores . The
elegance of the book (made in leather, with metal
bosses and fine decorations) and the
sumptuousness of the tunic (damasked edges make
it similar to a royal dress) express the nobility
Christ gained through his Passion, Death and
Resurrection. The intense light tends to detach
the closer image from the diffuse tonalities of
the landscape .
Christ`s eyes seem to reflect the color of the
brightening sky, which contrasts withthe Gospel`s
verse: "There was darkness over the all
land".
"God be merciful to us and bless us;
look on us with kindness, so that the whole world
may know your will; so that all the nations may
know your salvation" Psalm 67,1-2
