Byzantine
author, Christ
blessing; Madrid, Museo Lazaro
Galdiano (enamel on gold ). Also in craft
works, Byzantine art presents Christ as
"Pantocrator" (Lord of all) holding
the book with his right hand and so revealing the
mysteries of the Trinity and of the Incarnation.
Another peculiar characteristic of these works is
the presence of the nimbus (halo).
This enamel was
probably applied on a reliquary or on similar
kind of furnishing as seen by the holes on the
edge of the little metal disc. On the sides, in
two circles, the monogram, a Greek abbreviation,
states that is "Lesus Cristos", Jesus,
God`s oil, the Messiah. Christ`s eyes, framed by
hair and beard and made intense by thick
eyebrows, are impressive in the simplicity of the
picture.
"The Lord lift up his countenance
upon you and give you peace. So shall they put my
name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless
them" Numbers 6, 26-27
